At CGC University (CGCU), Mohali, we believe that education is truly a lifelong learning experience, guidance and comprehensive growth that is not just in the classroom. A mentor provides the benefits of guidance, encouragement and confidence to a mentee in the pursuit of academic and personal objectives in this process which is crucial in the process because it offers the mentee a strong guide, motivator and support system during this process.

CGC University's effective Mentor-Mentee Program (MMP) aims to promote positive relationships between faculty and students. This program not only offers mentoring to our students that is personalized but also includes a career counseling aspect and emotional health and the overall personality development. It gives the platform of open communication, trust and cooperation where any student will not be left behind in an attempt to reach excellence.

The MMP program embodies a vision of us as a support pillar of the students, where the mentors are role models and facilitators and the mentee is the participants in creating their own future. This collaboration will enable the creation of an effective learning experience at CGC University, which is aligned with our values of academic excellence, innovation, and human values.

It is my great delight to present Mentor-Mentee Program MMP at CGCU, Mohali. The program will offer a strong support network to students and aid in learning, career growth and personal health.

We truly believe that mentorship is central to the entire growth of our students. Mentors will assist mentees through this program to achieve their academic objectives, chart their career paths, and overcome obstacles in their learning processes.

Mentor-Mentee Program

Mentor-Mentee program is a vital component leading to a prosperous career and a brighter future of the students. The mentorship Program is designed to create a supportive environment where experienced individuals, known as Mentors, guide and assist less experienced individual, known as Mentees. It eliminates the gaps between the faculty and the students. Mentoring supports the students emotionally and provides an instrumental support, guidance, motivation and for effective pursuance of education. Every mentor is there to play a positive role in nurturing the student towards successful life in future through personal and focused guidance. It also envisages for building up the strengths of the students during their stay in the institution through effective interpersonal relationships between and among the students and so also the Mentor and Mentee.

Mentor-Mentee System

Mentor-Mentee system at CGCU, Mohali is an organized program whereby each faculty has been delegated with the responsibility of mentoring students. It is conducted both Physical (Offline) and Virtual (Online – post University timings) to deal with the issues related to Mentees. The Mentors are available in Physical as well on Virtual Platforms. To facilitate the smooth process, all mentors need to maintain a confidential detailed record of the activities of their mentee in terms of the Academic, Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular achievements.

In the process, Mentors record their observations and create a collaborative action plan to help the students improve their professional development. Post completion of the semester analysis on take aways from Mentor – Mentee is done and submitted to the office of Director Academics with a scope of improvement.

Academic Success

The program supports students in developing effective study habits, time management, and problem-solving skills. Mentors help identify challenges early and provide guidance to ensure consistent academic progress and achievement.

Career Preparation

Mentors guide students in exploring career options, preparing for placements, and pursuing higher studies or entrepreneurship. They help mentees build résumés, practice interviews, and gain the confidence to succeed in professional environments.

Community Engagement

The program motivates students to participate in community service and social responsibility initiatives. This cultivates empathy, inclusivity, and a sense of civic duty, helping students become socially conscious citizens.

Leadership Development

Students are encouraged to take leadership roles in clubs, events, and academic forums. This builds confidence, teamwork, and decision-making skills, preparing them to lead effectively in diverse settings.

Alumni Engagement

Strong connections with alumni provide students valuable networking, mentorship, and career insights. Alumni act as role models, inspiring mentees while fostering a lasting bond with CGC University.

Personal Growth

Mentors create a safe space for students to discuss challenges and build resilience. The program promotes confidence, self-awareness, and balanced development through academics, extracurriculars, and values.

Roles and Responsibilities of Mentor (Faculty Member)

Faculty as a Mentor

All the Faculty members are mentors. A mentor refers to the individual who helps and guides another person to become more skilled. Mentor offers personal and professional feedback to students to help them sail through their graduation. Mentoring can be described as a process of assistance and counseling of younger or less experienced individual (Mentee) to acquire certain skills that will contribute to professional and personal development of the latter. The mentor must be an empathetic listener with a clear grasp of the goals of the mentee, strengths and weaknesses. According to these objectives the mentor can help the mentee through his own experience, insights and feedback which will help the mentee to meet the objectives.

A good mentor must motivate and inspire the mentee to embrace challenges to learn and develop or engage in new activities that will instill confidence and self-esteem in the mentee. Lead the mentee by telling personal work experiences, skills, and networks that will assist the mentee to act towards his/her goals. The mentor must be conducive and not harsh or critical, but must keep in mind that people have different experiences and priorities. Give credible, positive advice and feedback to the mentee that is actionable.

Since trust is a fundamental component of the mentoring relationship, the communication between the mentee and the mentor is considered confidential. The three A's of mentoring—being accessible, attentive, and an active spectator—must serve as its foundation.

The role of a mentor

  • Mentor should be a positive role model.
  • Ensure a secure environment to discuss.
  • Students should be encouraged to interact with subject teachers.
  • Keep in touch with the parents of the mentees whenever there is need to do so.
  • Do not give personal comments or judgements.

Responsibilities of a mentor

  • To guide and counsel mentees on both Physical and Virtual platforms to deal with the issues related to Mentees.
  • Explain to the assigned mentees the idea of mentor-mentee system.
  • Arrange the meeting with all mentees and put down the required information in the required form, jot down any special need of a student and explain to them the entire plan of further meetings.
  • Monitor the attendance, academic performance and behavioral issues of the students.
  • Call parents to update them about the progress of their ward, as necessary.
  • Keep a record of how the identified underperforming mentees are doing and implement remedial measures where necessary.
  • Provide details on different scholarships and other student benefits.
  • Regular communication and meetings with the mentees.
  • Keep the contact details of the parents and students.
  • Record keeping of results of mentees.
  • Monitor the achievements of your students.
  • Make sure that the students are disciplined.
  • An effective student mentor must meet with mentees in a positive relationship, and provide the student with attention.
  • The mentor must possess positive self-esteem, respond effectively to stressful moments and withstand frustrating events.
  • Mentor should be able to listen effectively and speak at a level the student can comprehend and not be judgmental.
  • The mentor should be a role model and offer leadership and direction and foster a relationship that makes the student worthy in his/her dignity.
  • Mentor must support the accomplishments of the student, push them to improve, and be prepared to give them a new chance in case they make any lapses.

Responsibilities of a mentor

  • Do not say negative things about Co-Mentors / Mentees.
  • Be clear when it comes to establishing standards on academic integrity and honesty.
  • Set up a clear distinction between Mentoring and Friendship.
  • Never force mentees to accept personal beliefs, biases or opinions.
  • Do not control discussions; provide mentees with freedom to speak.
  • Be careful not to share confidential information.
  • Avoid favoritism or discrimination among mentees.
  • Do not disregard the concerns of mentees or discourage open communication.
  • Do not promise false things or make impossible promises.
  • Adhere to professional boundaries and do not meddle into personal decisions.
  • Make sure you hold regular meetings and communicate with mentees on time.
  • Offer constructive feedback rather than harsh criticism or judgment.
  • Take mentorship as a two-way process and not a one-way obligation.

Roles and Responsibilities of Mentee

Role of Mentees

Mentees are central to the Mentor-Mentee Program and their active involvement determines its success. Students are supposed to treat the relationship with sincerity, openness and a willingness to learn.

  • Attend mentorship meetings punctually and participate in meaningful conversations.
  • Don't be afraid to share your personal problems, career aspirations, and academic objectives with your mentor.
  • Follow your mentor's advice, take responsibility for your own development, and work towards your objectives.
  • Be punctual, maintain discipline, and treat each other with decency in all of your conversations.
  • Seek feedback, seize opportunities for development, and strike a balance between your coursework and extracurricular activities.

Responsibilities of Mentees

  • Regularly communicate with your mentors and have conversations with them.
  • Set academic, career, and personal goals so as to receive particular counseling of mentors.
  • Share with mentors your academic progress, challenges, and issues.
  • Act on the advice, proposals, and feedback offered by mentors.
  • Always be respectful, punctual, and keep the discussions private.
  • Focus on personal development through participation in academics, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities.
  • Keep mentors informed about progress, successes, and issues.
  • Approach the initiative with an attitude of excitement, curiosity, and eagerness to study.

Don’ts of a Mentee

  • Never miss scheduled mentorship meetings without notifying in advance.
  • Share academic difficulties, career issues and personal problems with the mentor.
  • Do not disregard the guidance, advice of the mentor or feedback.
  • Avoid disrespect, lateness, or unprofessionalism.
  • Do not reveal confidential conversations beyond the mentor-mentee relationship.
  • Do not get too reliant on the mentor; be responsible for personal development.
  • Shun away negative attitudes like unwillingness to learn, lack of interest, or lack of initiative.
  • Do not compare mentors or anticipate special treatment.
  • Resist procrastination in communication or neglecting to tell mentors about the progress and successes.
  • Also avoid being a one-sided recipient of mentorship without giving back to the relationship.
